of girls & gatorade…

Apparently, if you blink these days, you miss the whole relationship. No sooner had we extracted the name of said girlfriend from son #1 (11, almost 12, who was ‘going out with’ a grade 8 girl, apparently) by means of blackmail (amazing how quickly the cool ‘I’m not going to tell you’ demeanor changes once the prospect of eliminating internet access from his computer is dangled in front of him… the name was spat out before the threatening sentence was completed :P) we heard less than 2 days later, it was over. The relationship was not 6 days, but SEVEN days, old when it ended, I was told, as though the stakes were a little better having made it to seven days long, not six. Apparently, word started circulating through his friends a dump was coming his way so he beat her to it, and did the dumping. He did not bother to ask her if what his friends were telling him was true or not. Life in Grade 7 is complicated, eh?

Truth be told, I’m glad romance is still fairly simply presented at this point. I was a little alarmed to hear she was in grade 8, although I haven’t met her. Frankly (no offense to anyone with a Grade 8-aged daughter, please), I would think some Grade 8 girls have the potential to be a little more trouble with Grade 7 boys than I would like to deal with… and it’s not so much I think my Grade 7 son is still innocent or what have you, but there are smarts that come with dealing with things at 13 that just sometimes are not yet there at 12.

But, no bother, it’s over. Short, probably not too sweet (I’m not sure they had many conversations at all, it all began during a dance, is what I know). I wonder who it will be next… and if it might last EIGHT days. ;)

And, perhaps there will be no time for thinking about it. The child has taken on all kinds of extracurricular activities this fall which keep him quite busily occupied with things other than girls…cross country, soccer, band and the largest commitment, hockey. The positive thing so far this winter, at least, with the balmy weather we are *still* having (it’s rather surreal, usually summer is quite a memory by now) the lobby isn’t as cold as the rink… and I have managed to sneak in some decent knitting time while warming the benches provided to parents. This is a bonus over last year, where in another arena, during skating, it was too cold to take anything off, let along remove gloves in order to pick up metal needles.

It has begun - go Canucks, go Otters. Rah Rah Rah.

Last weekend, I had the pleasure of attending Fibrefest North, in Wiarton. It was awesome. Great time, great people, all fibrery goodness all the time. I wasn’t very smart in that I wasn’t taking many pictures… not sure why… but I got this one:

frost flowers and leaves by LaurieC
Is this not just awesome?? I am enthralled. Laurie knitted it in shetland wool.

I have a few more pics (of stash enhancements from the weekend) but I will save those for next time. They are already up on Ravelry (I keep forgetting to mention, my id is oceanwindknits). Be well, safe weekend to everyone.
